NRDA Tourism undertakes numerous marketing activities throughout the year which are available for tourism businesses within the region to become involved in.
Read on for more information about domestic and international consumer campaigns, visiting media programmes, and tactical marketing initiatives.
International Marketing Group (IMG)
NRDA Tourism has established an International Marketing Group of around 25 members, which has the objective of stimulating additional demand for the Nelson Tasman region and the members, in offshore markets by working with the international travel trade and with on-shore inbound tour operators (ITOs).
Among the criteria for joining the group is that operators are internationally wholesale ready (i.e. prepared to pay at least 25% commission for bookings through the traditional international travel distribution channels) and there is an annual membership fee.
Members are offered exclusive benefits such as exhibiting at trade exhibitions, participating in trade famil visits, and accompanying the International Marketing Manager on trade sales missions. For more information contact the International Marketing Manager.
Convention & Domestic Marketing Group (CDMG)
A cooperative of businesses who work to grow the convention, incentive and domestic leisure sector in the Nelson Tasman region. The Convention & Domestic Marketing Manager manages a year-round marketing programme and acts as a sales rep for the region and members in this highly specialised sector of tourism. The focus is mainly on shoulder and off-season activity.

NRDA Tourism attends the annual TRENZ trade show run by the Tourism Industry Association of New Zealand. TRENZ involves around 400 key travel industry wholesalers from around the world. These selected buyers are invited to the annual New Zealand-based event to increase their knowledge of New Zealand products and services, and to seek new product/services/regions for their brochures.
This event is the major opportunity for sellers (regions and suppliers) to meet with overseas buyers to exchange information. Up to 60 main appointments are scheduled with these key suppliers for each participant over the three day programme. Appointments are allocated matching the requests of buyers and sellers. Visiting media programme
With the assistance of visitor industry businesses in the region, NRDA Tourism hosts around 70 international and domestic media each year, who are here to research story lines for print, broadcast and online media articles.
This is the most cost effective form of publicity available, and results often reach readerships or audiences in the millions. There is no cost involved, but suppliers in Nelson provide services free of charge or at heavily discounted media rates.
Most international media come under sponsorship from Tourism New Zealand and NRDA Tourism acts as agent, undertaking local itinerary coordination and escorting most media. Please contact us if you are interested in finding out more about this programme.
NRDA Tourism hosts wholesale and occasional retail travel trade industry personnel who are here to familiarise themselves with the region. Visits comprise a mix of our invitees, and those who have chosen to visit themselves. In all cases the objective is to educate and inform the trade about products and services within the region, and to introduce suppliers here to potential sources of business.
Again there is no cost involved, but suppliers in Nelson Tasman provide services free of charge or at heavily discounted industry rates.

Domestic short-break seasonal campaigns
Over the past five years NRDA Tourism with the support of the Nelson Airport and industry operators has been active with a domestic marketing campaign in shoulder and winter months to encourage more visitors to the region. The key platforms for off-season promotions includes events, conference, cycle, wine and culinary, art and national park activities.
